Enter Trail #24, the Sebastian County Quilt Trail

The Sebastian County Quilt Trail was developed by Jennifer Cook and Judy Dedmon. Greenwood is located in the center of the county and is one of two county seats, sharing the role with Fort Smith. Other towns are Lavaca, Harford, Hackett, and Mansfield. Fort Smith is the home of the United States Marshals Museum, the Fort Smith National Cemetery. and University of Arkansas-Fort Smith. Greenwood borders the Fort Chaffee Military Reservation. The Old Jail Museum is the centerpiece of the Old Jail Museum Complex, a collection of historic and memorial structures in Greenwood which is maintained and operated by the South Sebastian County Historical Society. The society hosts an annual benefit, The Airing of the Quilts, which is a popular regional quilt show. It is held in early May at the Senator Ed Wilkinson Pavilion at Bell Park. During the quilt show, vintage quilts are displayed at the Old Jail Museum properties. #24-1, Patriotic Pride, is located at 3701 Watson Road, Greenwood. This barn quilt is owned and painted by Jennifer Cook. It is a vibrant barn quilt that captures the spirit of American patriotism through its bold and striking design. #24-2, Sunflower, is located at 9610 E. Hwy 10, Greenwood. This barn quilt is owned and painted by Judy Dedmon. It  is a radiant barn quilt that embodies the warmth and vitality of its namesake flower. The quilt features vibrant yellow and orange petals radiating from a rich, brown and green center, capturing the essence of summer’s golden fields and the simple beauty of rural life. #24-3, Lemoyne Star, is located at 9610 E. Hwy 10, Greenwood. This barn quilt is owned by Judy Dedmon and was purchased from a vendor during the Airing of the Quilts event held in Greenwood annually. Judy has always had a love for barn quilts and wanted one (or two) for her barn shed. It is a stunning tribute to American heritage and craftsmanship. This intricate design features eight-pointed stars, skillfully arranged to create a captivating visual effect. The patriotic color palette enhances the quilt’s appeal, symbolizing unity, pride, and the enduring spirit of the nation. The “Red, White, & Blue” Lemoyne Star stands as a vibrant testament to traditional quilting artistry and national pride.

#24-4, Tulip Garden, is located at 323 W. Dogwood St, Greenwood. Owned and painted by Krissy Barnes this block is a graceful barn quilt that captures the elegance and renewal associated with this beloved spring flower. The barn quilt showcases a delicate arrangement of tulip blooms in shades of pink, yellow, purple, and teal set against a fresh sky blue backdrop. #24-5, Pinwheel Star, is located at 323 W. Dogwood St, Greenwood. Owned and painted by Krissy Barnes, this block beautifully marries the timeless charm of classic star quilt block designs with the dynamic motion created by pinwheel motifs. The pinwheel effect within each star block not only adds a playful and whimsical touch to the quilt but also opens up a myriad of creative possibilities. These quilts often evoke a sense of nostalgia and craftsmanship, celebrating the artistry of traditional quilting techniques while offering endless variations in color, pattern placement, and scale. #24-6, Carpenter’s Star barn quilt is located at 5008 S. 33rd St, Fort Smith. It is owned by Brenda Gigliello and was a surprise gift from Brenda’s stepson, gifted in 2023 upon her return from quilt camp. The quilt block is made of small blocks of wood assembled together like a puzzle. It showcases the intricate craftsmanship and symmetry characteristic of traditional quilting patterns. The design features a bold starburst pattern, meticulously arranged with a harmonious blend of contrasting colors that create a sense of depth and dimension. This quilt pays homage to the skill and precision of artisans, symbolizing strength, resilience, and the beauty of handmade artistry. “Carpenter’s Star” stands as a testament to the enduring legacy of quilt-making and the timeless appeal of geometric elegance.

#24-7, Ohio Star Variation barn quilt block is located at 3715 E. Clarks Chapel Rd, Huntington. Kay Voss opened Mama’s Log House quilt shop in 1982 in a historic log house built almost 200 years ago. The log house differs from a log cabin because it is constructed with squared off, hand hewn timber, in this case mature oak trees. Built by a doctor on its current site in the early 1800s the log house reflects one of the construction techniques of the early settlers to the newly opened Louisiana Purchase territory. This historic log house is believed to be one of the oldest structures in Arkansas, and has been in Kay’s family since the 1940s. The expanded quilt shop now occupies a large, new building adjacent to the log house and an education building, The Academy, across the street. With more than three decades of experience, Mama’s Log House quilt shop is known as an established, reliable and fun source for quilters whether visiting the shop in person or visiting online.

#24-8 The Ohio Star barn quilt block is located at 307 E. Town Square, Greenwood and is one of three barn quilts that decorate the east side of the 1940’s Ole Barn. Once located on Greenwood’s North Main Street, in its current location the barn now houses farm implements and tools from the 1850s-1920s. It is a favorite exhibit of area school children. The barn quilts were painted by South Sebastian County Historical Society and Belle Point Quilt Guild members Kay Voss and Ann Akins. They were donated to the South Sebastian County Historical Society in approximately 2016. Kay and Ann are instrumental in the organization of the Airing of the Quilts, an annual benefit for the Historical Society. #24-9, Twin Sisters barn quilt block is located at 307 E. Town Square, Greenwood and is  one of three barn quilts that decorated the east side of the 1940s Ole Barn. Adjacent to the Ole Barn is the Vineyard Cabin, situated at the Old Jail Museum’s property. The cabin was built in circa 1848 by William Blaylock, one of the earliest settlers in the area, near the intersection of present-day highways 71 and 10. Mr. Blaylock lived and taught school in the cabin. Blaylock and his wife Rachel raised their children there as well. In 1903, the WIlliam and Mattie Vineyard family moved into the cabin, renting it until 1905 when they purchased it. Post World War II, the Vineyard family added many changes and improvements to this real estate, including additional rooms, hardwood floors, plumbing and electricity. Two Vineyard daughters, Mittie and Lela, inherited the property and became its loving caretakers after their parents’ death. They planted lush flowers and bountiful gardens. In the spring as you drive down Highway 10 west of Greenwood, the wisteria they planted can be seen spilling over the embankments. They were also enthusiastic quilters. Some of their quilts are aired in the cabin and on the cabin porch during the Airing of the Quilts. This property was passed on to the granddaughters of the Vineyard, Suzanne Francis and Sandra Blackstock who subsequently donated it to the South Sebastian County Historical Society. Restoration of the cabin was made possible by Suzanne, Sandra and their mother, Reba Vineyard Shaw, along with many people and companies across the United States. William Vineyard, another descendant, provided for the maintenance of the cabin through a fund he established. The Vineyard Cabin is essential in presenting the early life of the South Sebastian County HIstorical Society. People from all ages come to visit this building each year. #24-10, Hands All Around barn quilt block is located at 307 E. Town Square, Greenwood and is  one of three barn quilts that decorated the east side of the 1940s Ole Barn. Near the Ole Barn is the Redwine Pioneer Schoolhouse. This one-room school house is a replica of a turn of the century schoolhouse. It is furnished with original items used by early teachers L.M. and Delma Redwine. Originally located north of Greenwood on the Redwine Farm it was relocated to its current location when donated by Delmas Joyce Woosley (the Redwines’ daughter). #24-11, Crooked Creek barn quilt block, located at 1736 W. Center St, Greenwood, is one of the five distinctive blocks displayed at the Crooked Creek Quilt Shop. Owned by Margie Love and Marcella Pickett, the shop is a hub of expertise, specializing in long-arm quilting and the intricate art of trapunto. Combined, Margie and Marcella bring over 45 years of quilting experience to the table, making their shop a cornerstone of the local quilting community. Keith Pickett, Marcella’s husband, crafted these five quilt blocks post-retirement as a meaningful and creative pursuit. The Crooked Creek Barn Quilt Block, a unique variation of the traditional Irish Chain pattern, showcases the blend of artistry and skill that characterizes the work done at the shop. Each block not only enhances the shop’s exterior but also tells a story of craftsmanship, dedication, and the therapeutic nature of quilting.

#24-12, Patriotic Flag is located at 1736 W. Center St, Greenwood, and is one of five quilt blocks displayed at the Crooked Creek Quilt Shop. This particular quilt block holds deep sentimental value as it commemorates all the men and women who have served in the armed forces. Crafted by Keith Pickett, husband of Marcella Pickett, the shop’s owner, this block stands as a heartfelt tribute from a family with a personal connection to military service. Keith Pickett, a US Army veteran, poured his own experiences and respect for his fellow servicemen and women into the creation of this block. The Patriotic Flag not only serves as a beautiful piece of art but also as a powerful symbol of gratitude and remembrance, resonating with the community and honoring the sacrifices made for our country.
