In 1903, the WIlliam and Mattie Vineyard family moved into the cabin, renting it until 1905 when they purchased it. Two Vineyard daughters, Mittie and Lela, inherited the property and became its loving caretakers after their parents’ death. They planted lush flowers and bountiful gardens. In the spring as you drive down Highway 10 west of Greenwood, the wisteria they planted can be seen spilling over the embankments. They were also enthusiastic quilters. Some of their quilts are aired in the cabin and on the cabin porch during the Airing of the Quilts. This property was passed on to the granddaughters of the Vineyard, Suzanne Francis and Sandra Blackstock who subsequently donated it to the South Sebastian County Historical Society. Restoration of the cabin was made possible by Suzanne, Sandra and their mother, Reba Vineyard Shaw, along with many people and companies across the United States. William Vineyard, another descendant, provided for the maintenance of the cabin through a fund he established.
